Morning Cup of Vomiting in My Mouth: Skechers Shape-Ups
Posted on May 4th, 2010 by Tony GentilcoreTalk about perfect timing. The same day that someone sent me this video:
I come across a hyooooge display while walking through Macy’s with my girlfriend. I mean, one minute I’m perusing the Martha Stewart Collection, and the next, BAM - like a moth to a flame - I’m smack dab in front of this ginormous sign telling that, not only can I strengthen and tone my muscles, but I’ll also improve my posture and maximize caloric burn to boot.
All just by simply lacing up a pair of shoes and going for a walk! To be honest, I’m surprised the advertisement above didn’t claim that they also cure cancer and solve global warming.

Listen, I’m not knocking the whole notion that walking can be a great form of exercise. On the contrary, there’s a lot of research demonstrating how walking has a plethora of benefits and helps improve one’s overall sense of well-being. But come on, what’s with all the claims? We’re talking about walking here.
Tones Muscles: Given that most people equate “toning” muscles with lengthening muscles, this is absolutely not true. Every muscle has an insertion and origin that are fixed on a bone. The only way to lengthen a muscle, is to lengthen the bone. Not gonna happen.

Moreover, the easiest way to “tone” muscles is to be less fat. Sorry, but it’s true. That said, I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt and call this one a push. Get people moving, and they’ll presumably burn some calories. It’s hard to knock this one, but I think they’re really clenching for straws here.
Maximize Caloric Burn: Hmmm, I never realized that walking was such an intense form of exercise. How long do you think you’ll have to walk to burn off that deli-sized bagel and large soda you ate for lunch? What’s more, since when is walking considered exercise? I thought it was you know, walking?
Improves Posture: Riiiiiight. I don’t see how giving people a 2-3 inch heel lift, and placing them more into an anterior pelvic tilt will result in improved posture. Brilliant. In addition, I’d go so far as to say that these will cause or exacerbate more postural issues than they’ll prevent.
Increases Strength: Really? Where’s the progressive overload? Sorry, but the only way you’re going to get progressive overload through walking, is to increase your body weight. Nice try, though.
Unfortunately, this is yet another case of savvy marketing geared towards those people who think un-exercising counts as exercise. Next thing you know, people will be squatting on BOSU balls. Oh wait……

I did a whole blog post about my opinion of the TrekDesk and got pummeled with hate mail. Oh, they even make a optional Balast ball “chair” just in case you get tired of walking at 1mph and need to sit down but continue to burn calories.
I’m surprised you didn’t also mention the obvious about the shoes which is that they are darn right ugly.
P. J. Striet added these pithy words on May 4th, 2010 at 1:02 pm |This crap truly is unbelievable. I agree, don’t call walking exercise…it’s walking…and certainly don’t claim it’s a form of exercise which maximizes caloric burn.
I’m all for moving more and getting more NEAT, but people need to understand the difference between general physical activity (NEAT), structured training (EAT), “working out”/”trying” (somewhere in between NEAT and EAT), and also the difference between aerobic exercise and cardiovascular exercise (all aerobic exercise is cardiovascular but not all cardiovascular exercise is aerobic).
I’m tellin’ ya’…it’s an uphill battle trying to impact peoples lives as a fitness pro when you are up against stuff like sketchers shape ups and similar hogwash.
Niel added these pithy words on May 4th, 2010 at 1:27 pm |I thought muscles can be lengthened?
Well not in the sense most people want, but I recall Mike Robertson once writing a post that said muscles can become short or stiff. In the former situation, static stretches are performed to lengthen the muscle.
Can I get some clarification?
Zach added these pithy words on May 4th, 2010 at 2:58 pm |haha you truly have a gift for finding crappy infomercials. how come they never make infomercials for things like the vibram five fingers? is there some unspoken rule or government law that infomercials can only be made about products that have absolutely no scientific backing and are absolutely guaranteed not to work?
Bill added these pithy words on May 4th, 2010 at 10:03 pm |i like the part where they list all the things it will do for you and say, “and yes, happier.” Tony obviously it works on posture. Didn’t you here them say to lace up your shoes, stand up straight and pull your shoulders back. I also love how it makes walking easier so you do less, yet you recruit more muscle groups and its also harder.
Lisa added these pithy words on May 5th, 2010 at 9:16 am |Here’s another one, the Fitstix. Saw it yesterday in the Power Systems catalog. Two stick-type things you hold in your hands. Catalog description: “This simple, handheld exercise tool is part weighted baton, part maraca. Hold one in each hand during kickboxing, step and other cardio routines to tone the arms, back and shoulders while you keep the beat to music. Each weighs just under 1 lb and contains special rhythm producing granules that slide freely from end to end causing the muscles to react.” From the website: “Developed by fitness trainer Karen Joy to increase the heart rate and burn more calories in less time! Tone and sculpt your arms, abs, back and shoulders all without lifting weights! Lose weight, inches and CLOTHES SIZES.” Wow, all that with two sticks that together weigh less than 2 lbs.
Dave added these pithy words on May 5th, 2010 at 12:16 pm |i got all the way to 2min 59s before i had to stop watching! Whats sad is people will actually buy these hoping to get in better shape and end up screwing their posture so badly they will probably quit any good intentions they started with.
Matthew added these pithy words on May 5th, 2010 at 12:35 pm |Actually talked to my foot doctor a few times in the past regarding gimmicks like these…
He mentioned several people coming in complaining of ankle pain after wearing them. Mentioned something about these actually creating more ankle instability then anything else…
Also a co-worker was showing off sandals the other day with a similar bump on the bottom. Explaining that they didn’t do anything for her and were actually hurting her. Not a good conversation.

Kathy Ekdahl added these pithy words on May 12th, 2010 at 12:00 pm |Tony- you and I have ESP. I wrote a blog on Sketchers Shape-Ups entitled “Shape-Ups Should Ship Out”- the day before! I was driving here in Hudson and saw 5 people wearing “Shape-Ups” - three were obese, one was smoking a cigarette and another was a guy. NO need to say more- dork. I went ballistic after that.
The studies on “shape-up” like sneakers- where the company is getting their lies from- involved only a handful of participants. The average increased oxygen consumption while wearing MBT sneakers (Masai Barefoot Technology) was 2%- so this is how the company can say “they burn more calories.” MBT was original form of these sneakers designed to mimic the gait patter of Masai Warriors walking barefoot on the plains of Africa. So- we want to mimic barefoot walking, and we put people on a 2 inch platform! BRILLIANT! I don’t know how these companies get away with the lies and exaggerations- and how the public is so stupid as to believe everything they see on TV.
ARRGHH!!!!
