Train the Same: Women Should Train Like Men

Women Train Like Men

I’ll be honest:  I was thiiiiiiiiiiis close to taking a slight “blogcation” the rest of the week. I figured since I’ll be bit preoccupied with stuffing my face with anything I can get my hands on for the next 48 hours, that most people would be in the same mindset and not really give a second thought to signing onto my site.

- Eating copious amounts of turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and apple pie?  Check.

- Watching football till I can’t feel the right side of my face? Check.

- Check out Tony’s blog?  Come on…..isn’t there more apple pie to eat?

Don’t worry, my feelings aren’t hurt.  I know where I stand in the grand scheme of things.  You know, there was a time when you used to compliment me, tell me I looked nice, and used to be excited to see me. Made me feel special. But now, it’s like….it’s like I don’t even exist anymore.  It’s like I’m a ghost.

*tear rolls down cheek*

LOL – I’m just messing with you.  Thanksgiving is about family, friends, and turkey legs……the last think I expect you to do is check out my blog.  Have fun!  Be safe!  Enjoy!

But seriously, you used to compliment me.

I wasn’t going to write anything today (or tomorrow), but then I realized that Thanksgiving isn’t a universally celebrated holiday and that I’d be a huge jerk-face if I deprived the rest of the world my sage words….(Poop!).

Luckily enough I just had a new article go up on BodyBuilding.com that’s already gaining some steam (and I haven’t even publicized it yet!).

It’s on a topic that write about quite a bit – women and training.  This article has more of a “soap box” feel to it and is more of a rant than anything else, but I feel it sends a great message nevertheless.  Give it a look and let me know what you think.

Train the Same: Women Should Train Like Men (<—- Snaps finger in z-formation, Mmmmm-hmmmm)

PS: And on a (real) serious note:  I just wanted to say THANK YOU to everyone for their support over the past year. TonyGentilcore.com wouldn’t be what it is without the continued support of its readers and fan base and I wish you all a safe and happy Thanksgiving.

Did I just blow your mind? Make (or ruin) your day? Leave a comment, then share this with EVERYBODY.

Great article. I wish more women would listen. There are a couple girls at the gym I go to (serious musclehead gym with an amazing atmosphere of encouragement and fun) that are on the ellipticals when I get there. An hour and a half later, I have finished my training session (including heavy singles, rest periods, accessory work, and a little stairmaster or a barbell finisher) they are still on the ellipticals. Usually complaining that they are tired and hungry and aren’t getting results. But they don’t want to get bulky, like the guys. It makes me very sad. It took me a long time to learn that 3 sets of 20 with 5lbs wasn’t ever going to get me where I want to be and I want to share the information with everyone, but not everyone is open to hear it.

Happy turkey day to you and your lovely lady!

Thanks for posting Tony. The holidays is no reason to stop upping my fitness IQ.

As an Australian I’m sitting at my desk working and no thoughts of turkey (plus its – in your language – 90 degrees outside, so turkey is not really the thing). So the rest of the world does appreciate the holiday effort

Thanks asdf – still going to be taking ACTUAL Thanksgiving Day off (today)…..but will be back on Friday.

Men in the gym do bench press assisted by their bros doing an upright row, curls with a big lean back, and crunches.

Women should not train like men, they should train effectively.

Okay, okay……I get it. I should have chosen the title more wisely….;o)

Good article! I wish I could get more of my friends on board. People have started asking if I have been increasing my cardio to get the results I am seeing. I just smile and say, “No, I’m going to the gym less right now and lifting really heavy.” They look at my cross-eyed! Now that all of my imbalances from 10 years at a desk job are catching up, I can lift more. It’s SO exciting!

The one thing I am TIRED of hearing…”You are going to ruin your knees if you lift too much weight.” How do you like to respond to that?

    • Alice

From what I understand, lifting heavy with proper form can actually increase the strength of the knee joint. I’m fairly sure that this is a gym myth that still exists. I just raise my eyebrows to these types and try to agree that a lot of people think a lot of different things,,,,

      Tony?

      • TonyGentilcore

I’m right there with you Alice. Most people who state that squatting heavy (or deep) hurts the knees aren’t squatting properly to begin with.

Strengthening through a full ROM will undoubtedly make the joint stronger in the long run.

    • TonyGentilcore

Good for you Codie and happy to hear that you’re kicking ass in the gym.

As far as how to respond to the knee comment, I’d just go with, “huh, that’s weird….my knees feel perfectly fine.”

It’s an old myth that just won’t die. It’s best to just play ignorant and not bother with trying to rationalize with other people who won’t listen anyways.

      • CodieD

Thanks! That’s pretty much the answer I got from my trainer. He said either ignore it or get all technical on them and so they won’t know what to say back, or say, “explain exactly how that works..”.

I do have knee issues (patellofemoral and a bit of knee tendonitis), but I feel best when I am moving at the gym. It’s when I stop moving and am stuck at my desk 8 hours per day that things get aggravated. Darn desk jobs!

Your article made me think I should do more step-ups and forward lunges to help strengthen the head of vastus medialis. I want the “tear drop” shape guys are after if it means my knee issues get better. Who cares if my old skinny pants don’t fit? I can go buy new ones that probably look better! :)
