* on the trap bar
Soooooo, assuming I could actually post a poll on here (which I can’t), does this mean I’ve fulfilled my New Year’s resolution to deadlift 600 lbs this year?
Vote No for “Nice try Tony, but the trap bar is to deadlifting as the Smith Machine is to squatting.”
OR
Vote Yes for “Tony, you’re a ninja.”

And to give you credit, when you said “deadlift 600 pounds” you didn’t specify conventional, sumo, trap bar, rack pull, etc. So I say it counts!!!! ; )
MATIBU added these pithy words on Jan 27th, 2010 at 11:50 am |Tony you are a ninja. I love trap bar deadlifts and its damm hard to do them. So the credit is all yours
Cheers bro!!!! nin…ja nin…ja (tmnt sound track form movie one or two)
Tony Gentilcore added these pithy words on Jan 27th, 2010 at 12:02 pm |Thanks Nia. But admittedly, I do want to hit a 600 lb CONVENTIONAL pull this year. Only 50 lbs to go!
KennyZ added these pithy words on Jan 27th, 2010 at 12:21 pm |Ninja!
Andy added these pithy words on Jan 27th, 2010 at 12:35 pm |So, I hate to say it but it does not count. It is very impressive but a trap deadlift is “easier” than a conventional deadlift. NICE WORK though! WOW!
Brennan added these pithy words on Jan 27th, 2010 at 12:35 pm |EPIC! 100% pure ninja. You could’ve used a cooler t-shirt to do that lift though.
Mike added these pithy words on Jan 27th, 2010 at 12:53 pm |I say it counts. 600 lbs off the floor is 600 lbs off the floor. Congratulations.
By the way, I’ve been reading your blog for a long time and I love it. I’ve learned a lot and I am always entertained. Thanks and congratulations again.
Jo added these pithy words on Jan 27th, 2010 at 1:00 pm |You said “But admittedly, I do want to hit a 600 lb CONVENTIONAL pull this year.”
I think you just answered your own question. Awesome, but no. :)
Robert added these pithy words on Jan 27th, 2010 at 1:26 pm |Gonna have to say “no” on that. Trapbar gives you a few extra inches which makes quite a difference. It’s still very impressive and very ninja. I am actually curious if you’d say that you have perfect form on this? Not that I think you don’t, because I am still in the stages of deadlifting where I am trying to figure this out for myself. I also realize that PRs rarely see “perfect form.” From this angle, it’s hard to tell, but there seems to be some lower back rounding as you come up, but as I said, maybe some of this is acceptable? It’s definitely not exaggerated. I am trying to work on my own DL form and I am curious what you’d have to say about your own here.
Dave Chipit added these pithy words on Jan 27th, 2010 at 1:33 pm |No, but with the all the respect in the world since it is 600 pounds, and that’s darn impressive by any terms. PLus you’ll hit 600 with a regular bar and then be able to say yes to both.
Jen added these pithy words on Jan 27th, 2010 at 1:53 pm |I vote Ninja.
Lelli added these pithy words on Jan 27th, 2010 at 4:47 pm |I can’t say that it counts. But what I can say is that it’s STILL 600lbs no matter how you cut it. Trap Pulls are a good way to get closer to that goal. Almost there man. I’m at about 530 conventional right now….that 600lb marker looks tasty from here.
Nia Shanks added these pithy words on Jan 27th, 2010 at 4:58 pm |Okay, Tony. I understand. ; )
Don’t worry . . . you’re still a Ninja!!
Tony aka the Ninja added these pithy words on Jan 27th, 2010 at 6:37 pm |Tony you are my hero! Your deadlift was unbelievable!!!!!
J.B. added these pithy words on Jan 27th, 2010 at 6:43 pm |Negative there ghost-rider, that pattern is full.
A trap-bar deadlift is the deadlift equivalent of a 2 board, but still an impressive lift though.
You’ll get it before spring.
Mike added these pithy words on Jan 27th, 2010 at 7:50 pm |No.
It’s still impressive but it’s not fulfilling the dream.
Sorry dude.
James added these pithy words on Jan 27th, 2010 at 8:00 pm |Tony,
Ninjas are fast, quiet and stealthy…you’re too damn big to be a ninja!
Indy added these pithy words on Jan 27th, 2010 at 8:22 pm |Great “Trap Bar” deadlift. Captian Mc Awesomepants needs to pull conventional or sumo. Looking forward to watching the awesomeness.
Darren added these pithy words on Jan 27th, 2010 at 8:55 pm |Gotta admit thats pretty cool. As for being a ninja, well, its not like you pull six hundred pounds and then, like, just become a ninja instantly. Tony, there is so much more to being a ninja than a decent trap bar deadlift. For instance: I’ve never seen you emerge from shadow to silently dispatch an enemy and I’ve never seen you do the full side splits in a narrow hallway so your enemies pass unknowingly beneath you. And ninjas don’t just go ’round asking people if they’re ninjas. All in all I have to say you’re not coming across in a very ninja-ly way. Good lift though.
Max Shank added these pithy words on Jan 28th, 2010 at 1:02 am |Are you going to go around telling people you can deadlift 600lbs? Or are you going to tell them you can trap-bar deadlift 600lbs?
I think you know the answer.
Badass lift.
DaveC added these pithy words on Jan 28th, 2010 at 9:39 am |Impressive, though I can deadlift deadlift 1000lb easily -
10 x 100lb - same tonnage surely? C’mon? No? Fine.
Biskit added these pithy words on Jan 28th, 2010 at 11:57 am |Pretty damn cool even though it’s the trap bar. But replies are up near 23!!! that should count for something ;)
Danny added these pithy words on Jan 28th, 2010 at 12:46 pm |you deadlifted 600lbs. I don’t give a shit what internet naysayers think, and neither should you. Great pull.
Wonder Woman added these pithy words on Jan 28th, 2010 at 9:09 pm |I second what that Danny guy said.

h added these pithy words on Feb 9th, 2010 at 1:11 pm |i have to say NO.
it’s an impressive lift, but… the grips are a lot higher on trap bars, which makes things a lot easier (at least for me)
Mark Ivey added these pithy words on Feb 12th, 2010 at 1:20 am |How about Option 3: “The trap bar is to deadlifting as the Smith Machine is to squatting ninjas.”
